Some of the ladies from the Salon de Salope, which was a pop-up shop at Outskirts.

thank you!

A big thanks to everyone who helped with the Outskirts stall, dropped by to say hello, kept me company, bought things, and brought me food. It was a fun day (although I was quite glad when it was all done and a beer was waiting at the Brass Monkey...). If you're wondering what the canvas is, my stall was next to the folks from Tea + Art, who were running an interactive project where anyone could paint, draw, glue what they liked.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone who helped out!

A few scenes from the Restyle set up in the Cultural Centre which is part of the Perth Fashion Festival. Vintage clothes and a very cute caravan. I think it will still be on over the weekend.

Two helper bees, Sarah and Elissa, came over the other day to help me get ready for the stall on Sunday. Thank you girls, I really appreciate it. While she was here, I took a few snaps of Sarah's new blue hair.

The Colour H turns two!

Hey, I bet you did not know that today my blog turns two. Yep, go back to this post - 20 September 2009 - and have a look. To summarise my career as briefly as I possibly can, I studied photography when I left school, worked for a while taking photos but found the income too unreliable, travelled, went back to uni, got a government job and a stable income, got bored, started a blog, got a different (and way better) government job, started taking photos again, went part time. Now I have a good mix. This photo is of me when I did a job for the State Theatre a few months ago.

When I started the blog I wasn't sure where it would lead. All I knew was it seemed a shame that my photos were all cooped up on my computer, I wanted people to see them. That's still the case, it's all about the sharing. The difference is now I take photos with my blog in mind. I drag my camera everywhere. Even to work.

On an unrelated topic, I have to give props to my mum who made a comment on this post about my upcoming stall, noting how great The Colour H is - but who signed it anonymously. When questioned in an email if it was her, she said it she did not want to sign it from mum "in case someone important saw it". I like that you think important people are looking at my blog, even though they are clearly not. And if they were, I think its ok if your mum is the only person who leaves a comment. So please, sign as mum in future!

Oh yeh, I changed the header again. If you are viewing from a reader go to the blog and have a look.

I raced around town today trying to take photos (for work) that represented the challenges facing metropolitan governance in Perth. Yeh, that's easy. It's for a website, I'll share the link when its done. These are some that won't make it to the web. It was hard trying to get photos that didn't contain identifiable people (because then you need a model release) or identifiable landmarks that would link the images to a specific local government. I just had to capture "urban". When I stopped in the middle of William St to take the photo of the 'slow' sign having a rest, the workmen looked at me like I was either mad, or committing a Federal offence. I ran away. It's nifty when I get to do fun things at work.

Sooo... the new 'cactus' sculpture... hmmmm. Pretty much everyone I have spoken to has expressed some degree of horror about the strange green thing that has sprouted at the end of Forrest Chase. Lord Mayor, Lisa Scaffidi, has been forced to defend it (see a news story here) and its $1m cost to rate payers. As a sculpture, I don't care for it either way. It looks like a piece of playground equipment, so its hard to truly dislike it. But I do think it's wrong for the location. It's out of place with its surrounds. It's jarring to the eye and looks like it landed from outer space. It's just weird, and not in an interesting way, just in an awkward, unpleasant, restless way. Seeing it makes me quite uncomfortable.

See look, that's me on page 30. When they sent me this I was a bit nervous, like now I can't pull out and pretend I never had anything to do with it. I'm printed in the program, I better show up. I've never had a stall before and have seriously NO idea what it will be like! It looks like there are a zillion interesting things to do and see (you can download a passport/program from their website here) and you can collect free pins from certain shops. I think it will be a good day... I'm half super excited, and half really nervous. What if I have forgotten to organise some incredibly vital thing? What if I don't sell anything at all? What if it pours with rain??? Just trying to keep calm, and keep it simple... but that's not really in my nature. It comes more naturally for me to worry and make things complicated. Oh well. Its all going ahead, so I just have to roll with it!

outskirts update

Hello there. Busy times at the moment, trying to organise my stall, but I think I have it all covered. Pretty much. I hope. About two weeks ago I did a bit of a test run of prints (the top photo) to help me choose which prints I would sell. I had about 45 I quite liked but with the help of a specialist team of market researchers and several focus groups, I narrowed it down to 25. I have them all printed now (the other photos above), I have all the other bits and pieces I need, and tomorrow's task is to package them up and make them look nice. I hope you can drop by next Sunday and choose a favourite one to buy. There will be large ones (8 x 12) and small ones (5 x 7). They will fit nicely and look lovely in a cheapo Ikea frame. For details of the event go here. And remember, I am in Hook Lane, so come and find me... 10-4, next Sunday, William St Northbridge. See you there!

The window of Country Rd on Murray St, and the alarming colour developments occurring on the corner of William and Wellington Streets. Not entirely disturbing on its own, but completely bizarre that the next section is green and white, and the next is yellow and orange (not shown) (will not be shown).

Stripey straws... Never really bothered using straws until I got these. They're fun. Clearly I am easily amused.

One time, when I was a teenager I went to the movies at the Lumiere, remember that place? I would guess I was seeing something like Heathers, Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, something around that era. I bought a drink and I asked the guy who served me if I could have a straw. He looked at me like I'd kicked a bunny and proceeded to tell me how bad they were for the environment. I was too young and shy to tell him he was being a knob, and I was so embarrassed I didn't even want a straw anymore even though I think he reluctantly produced one. It had such an impact, I still remember it vividly.

That is the sum total of my thoughts on straws.

special announcement!

Hey, here's some news! The Colour H is going to be a part of Outskirts 2011. I'm going to have a little stall, selling prints. I'll be in one of the back alleyways, with the other cool kids (err, that really means you're gonna have to come looking for me somewhat off the main event). You'll come drop by and say hello won't you? And maybe buy something? Maybe? There'll be signs and stuff, you won't miss me, I swear. Sunday 25th, William St, Northbridge. If you're on the facebook, click here for event details.

See you there!
